Introduction

You are a young analyst sitting in your office and working hard on an analysis which should be sent off by the next day. You are quite nervous as you are running late. Suddenly, the phone starts ringing. When you answer it, you hear the voice of Prof. Novotný:

Prof. Novotný: “Hello, I’ve just emailed you some data. I need a simple blood pressure comparison in patients treated with three types of high blood pressure medicines. We also monitored the effect of drinking grapefruit juice but unfortunately the charts show no difference between the groups. Tomorrow night’s the deadline for submitting an abstract to a major cardiology conference, so I’d need it by tomorrow afternoon. It’s really just the comparison by drugs since the descriptive summary has been made by my PhD student. He wants me to tell you that he has already verified the normality of the data.”

It is impossible to say no to the professor, so you answer: “Hello, professor, wait a moment please till I open the data you sent me...”

“At first glance, the data seem well-organized, clearly described, and I can’t see any typos in the captions or any missing values. I’ll do my best to send you the results by tomorrow afternoon.”
